Known as the New Yorker’s New York, the Upper West Side is the neighborhood of Manhattan that lies between Central Park and the Hudson River above West 59th Street. Primarily a residential and shopping area, the residents often work in the more commercial parts of Midtown and Lower Manhattan.
The Upper West Side has a reputation of being where New York City’s more liberal, cultural, and artistic workers live, as opposed to the more affluent and conservative business types of the Upper East side. Sidewalks in the Upper West Side are usually crowded during the day with performers who are rushing to auditions, families running errands, and business people in suits and white sneakers dashing from appointment to appointment. In the evening, the activities turn toward the inside where singles can mingle in any of the many restaurants and bars in the Upper West Side.
