Known as the New Yorker’s New York, the Upper West Side is the neighborhood of Manhattan that lies between Central Park and the Hudson River above West 59th Street. Primarily a residential and shopping area, the residents often work in the more commercial parts of Midtown and Lower Manhattan.
The Upper West Side has a reputation of being where New York City’s more liberal, cultural, and artistic workers live, as opposed to the more affluent and conservative business types of the Upper East side. But, the Upper West Side does have its fair share of artists, actors and writers. The Upper West Side neighborhood is rather upscale with the median household income well above the Manhattan average.
The Upper West Side is conveniently located near Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. The neighborhood itself is renown for the elegant pre-war brownstones lining the quiet streets. In fact, much of the area is protected because of its landmark status. The restored townhouses and high-priced co-op apartments are highly sought after properties by young families as well as young professionals and actors. The luxury apartment buildings of the Upper West Side make a great background for an interesting stroll. In fact, that’s the best way to get acquainted with the neighborhood.
Sidewalks in the Upper West Side are usually crowded during the day with performers who are rushing to auditions, families running errands, and business people in suits and white sneakers dashing from appointment to appointment. In the evening, the activities turn toward the inside where singles can mingle in any of the many restaurants and bars in the Upper West Side.
