Within the blocks of the East 60’s and 70’s is where you will find New York City’s "Gold Coast", meaning expensive coops and condominium buildings which are located in mansions and pre-war era buildings. Actually, this section of New York City might have the most expensive real estate found anywhere in the country. In recent years, some of these coops have seen prices in the $3-30 million dollar range.
Central Park lies within Manhattan´s Upper East Side. The 843-acre park came into existence in 1853 when wealthy residents in the area wanted a place to emulate the fine gardens in England and Paris. In 1870, after a controversy over who would be responsible overseeing the development, the mayor appointed commissioners to provide oversight.
The Upper East Side also is the home of world-class cultural institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art which houses artifacts from over 5,000 years, and the Guggenheim Museum which houses international contemporary and modern art.
On the corner of Lexington and 59th Street is Bloomingdale's which is well known as one of New York City’s shopping icons, and a favorite for stylish customers. On Madison Avenue the window shopping can become intoxicating with all the tempting upscale boutiques.
The portion of Park Avenue which lies between Lexington and Madison Avenue is an calm oasis with wide streets suitable for leisurely strolling. Featured in this area of the Upper East Side is lovely architecture and a median strip that offers a carpet of tulips in season, and various sculptures for year-round enjoyment.
