Board Approval is required to purchase in Co-Op buildings. If you have made it to the interview you have most likely passed the financial and social hurdles with the co-op board.
Use these 12 tips to successfully pass the Co-Op Interview:
- Arrive early and bring a copy of your board package with you to refer to if questioned by the board. You should know your board package inside and out.
- Remember that boards are interviewing you, you are not interviewing them. They will ask personal questions. The less you say the better. Always remain cordial.
- Your financial packet speaks for itself therefore there is no need to overdress. Dress conservatively and sharp but you may want to leave your big diamonds at home.
- The board interview is not the time to ask specific questions about the building or doorman. You may appear uninformed or indifferent or offend a board member.
- Do not name drop. The board or the neighbors may not like that person in the building.
- Resist touting your accomplishments as the board has heard it before.
- Do not bring up rennovations, sublets or pets unless asked.
- Boards like individuals who would be willing to serve on the board and residents who fit it in.
- Do not oversell yourself, but be yourself.
- Do not discuss barbecuing on a balcony, terrace or roof as it is illegal in NYC.
- If you have special skills or talents which would you would be willing to contribute to the building, such as your occupation as an attorney, landscape architect or engineer, make it known.
- The board will notify you a few days later, so do not expect their decision at the interview.
